When you are on your weight loss journey there are just so many challenges.  So often we are in positions that make it difficult to make the healthy choices necessary to keep us on track.  One of the biggest issues I have is when other people are enjoying an unhealthy snack in my vicinity.  Let me explain just what I mean.  

You have been doing so well with your healthy choices and the next thing you know someone next to you starts crunching on a delicious bag of Doritos. (If you don’t agree that Doritos are delicious then insert your snack of choice here)  All of the sudden that is all you can think about.  You need to get your hands on some Doritos! You know you shouldn’t eat them but the craving is too strong now.  If you can’t get some Doritos than you are ready to eat whatever you can get your hands on at this point.  Something crunchy, something sweet, it doesn’t even matter any more.

Okay, so we have all been there right?  It is just down right crazy how the urge to just eat the whole house comes over you.  You start feeling anxious and deprived because of this person who is obnoxiously munching on those Doritos right in front of your face! They probably never had a weight issue in their life, can eat whatever they want and don’t care about your struggle! Whew! I was starting to feel a little hangry thinking about those delicious Doritos! Not to worry I am totally prepared and just guzzled down some water.  So where was I?  Oh yeah, unlike the chip chomper next to you, you can’t just scarf down some nacho cheese goodness with no thought or planning. The question is how to overcome the snack attack when it arises?  We have to be prepared.  You have to arm yourself with good healthy food options to combat those cravings when they hit you.  If you need something crunchy you could have some carrots, celery or even pickles. If you need something sweet make sure you have grapes on hand (grapes are nature’s candy). Tangerines, oranges, apples, bananas are all good go to snacks. You could have some almonds, low-fat cheese stick, greek yogurt, or low-fat cottage cheese. You know what kind of healthy foods you enjoy so just make sure that you always have some available to you.  

It is those times that we are not prepared that we make bad choices and then we beat ourselves up over them.  If you just would have had a banana in your purse you wouldn’t have stopped at the gas station and got a candy bar.  If you would have had a protein bar handy when you had no time to prepare a meal you wouldn’t be hitting the drive-thru.

Another way to prevent snack attacks are to keep yourself hydrated. Sometimes your body is really just thirsty.  If you drink water all day you will keep from making the mistake of misunderstanding your thirst for hunger and ingesting unnecessary calories. So the lesson here is preparation and hydration two very important factors in your weight loss journey.
